OSD is a boarding school for deaf children.  It was established in 1870 to provide free education for deaf kids, and is one of Oregon’s oldest state-operated programs. OSD is owned and funded by the State of Oregon, and is the only deaf school in the state.  It also houses Oregon’s largest collection of state history in its museum. Deaf children come to live at the school to learn American Sign Language and life skills, as well as for their standard education.  It’s an immersive environment.  The spirit of the school bears resemblance to the Harry Potter stories – it’s a boarding school for special kids (like Hogwarts), where the students become like siblings and the teachers become like parents to them.  OSD is truly a second home to the students.
